The challenge
For four decades, Tally owned accounting software in India with TallyPrime. But success became its trap. The brand become the product and the brand looked painfully outdated to younger audiences, a generation of entrepreneurs who expected their business partners to feel as modern as they did.
The insight
While other startups worshipped the hustle, Tally believed in something rare; growth for all. Not just revenue growth, human growth. This phisophy came from the founder Shyam Sunder Goenka and lived in the hand-drawn logo he sketched himself. In a world of algorithmic perfection, here was a logo that exuded pure human warmth. The question was not whether we should change it. The question was, why would we?
The solution
We did not rebrand Tally. We unleashed it. Starting with that hand-drawn swoosh, we built an entire illustration language that captured the founder’s humility and the brand’s growth philosophy. Every stroke extended the original logo’s DNA, turning a single mark into a universe of human-centred storytelling. The new language also captured the essence of Tally’s four new values: Honour, Nurture, Master and Create. By creating individual personalities for each value, we elevated them from corporate speak to principles that people can resonate with and inculcate in their lives.
The impact
Using the primary red and black colours of the mother brand we expanded this identity across every touchpoint, website, office spaces, social media, prodicts and merchandise. For Tally’s sub-brands, including TallyPrime, TallyEducation, TallyCapital and TallyEdge, we continued the same identity with the respective colours of the sub-brands.
This identity went beyond just design. The human element also reflected its commitment to its customers, the care and partnership that is integrated into Tally’s sales philosophy. Employees in Mumbai, Dubai and East Africa, started wearing the brand like a badge of honour.
Externally, Tally stopped looking like every other enterprise software company and started looking like itself, the rare tech brand that chose warmth over clinical efficiency. We turned heritage into a competitive advantage. In a category obsessed with erasing the past, Tally celebrated it.
